6 Hurdles That Stop You Getting Promoted

When you’re fighting for a promotion at work you need to do everything you can to prove that you’re the right person for the job. But no matter how hard you work to impress your boss, there are some things that can stop you from getting a promotion. That one barrier might be the only thing standing between you and your promotion but until you get past it, you’re never going to progress.

To help you secure that promotion next time it comes up, here are some of the biggest hurdles and how you can overcome them.

 

Lack Of Qualifications

People are always thinking about qualifications when they’re trying to land a job at a new company but they often forget it when it comes to progression within their existing company. Qualifications are often seen as a way to get your foot in the door so people don’t think they’re that relevant when it comes to internal appointments. However, that’s not always the case. Even if you’ve got all of the right skills, not having that piece of paper could mean getting overlooked for promotion. For example, if a nurse that has been working for a few years wants to apply for a senior position, they’re likely to have the skills but not the necessary qualifications. They’ll need to do an online RN BSN program to get the right qualification. They were probably capable of filling that role beforehand but they wouldn’t be considered without the qualifications.

People find themselves in this situation more often these days as the number of people with degrees is rising. It means that you could miss out on promotion in favor of somebody that has less experience than you. It might be worth looking into some online qualifications so you can compete.

 

No Self-Promotion

Self-promotion is a tricky thing because you don’t want to come across as arrogant, but if you hold back too much, you’re never going to be considered for new positions. There’s nothing wrong with talking about your skills and achievements and you should make it known that you actually want the job. If your boss thinks that you’re happy in your current role and you don’t want to move up, they’ll overlook you. Don’t beat around the bush, if you know that there’s a position available, go into their office and tell them that you want to be considered and why you’d be great at the job.

 

Poor Time Management

One of the biggest things that employers are looking for is time management skills. Even if you’re meeting deadlines in your current role, that doesn’t mean your time management skills are good enough for promotion. You’re going to be taking on more responsibilities and your boss needs to be confident that you can handle it. In the weeks and months while your boss is deciding on who to promote, you should make an effort to be as efficient as possible and hit deadlines early. However, make sure that you don’t sacrifice the quality of your work to get it in early. Working outside of normal hours also shows that you’re invested in the company and you’re willing to go out of your way to get things done.

 

Not Networking Enough

It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. It’s an old cliche but it’s true. That doesn’t mean you need to suck up to the boss if you’re ever going to get a promotion, but you do need to have a good working relationship with them. Your skills and qualifications are important but you’ve got to remember that your boss is also choosing somebody that they’re going to work closely with every day. Naturally, they’ll want to choose somebody that they get along with well so taking a bit of time to form a relationship and talk about things outside of work from time to time is a good idea.

They’re also not going to be making the decision alone. They’ll seek the advice of their superiors and other department heads when choosing between candidates. If they bring up your name in conversation and nobody knows who you are, that doesn’t bode well. However, if your name comes up and they’ve all heard of you and your work, and more importantly, they like you, you’re far more likely to be considered for the role.

 

Underestimating The Competition

If you take a look at others in the department who are going for promotion as well and think that they’re no threat so you can just coast along, you aren’t going to get the job. Even if they don’t seem like they’re doing much extra at work, you’ve got no idea what extra work they’re doing at home or what ideas they’ve brought to the boss. You should always assume that they’re doing just as much, if not more than you.

It’s also important that you don’t start working against your competitors. Obviously, you don’t want them to get promoted over you but if you start sabotaging their work, you’re only hurting your own chances. Your boss is looking for a team player that always has the best interests of the company at heart. Not cooperating with competitors just makes you look petty and your boss is likely to reconsider.

 

Low Self Esteem

So many people suffer from low self esteem and a fear of failure and it stops them from going after new opportunities. If you don’t go for the promotion in the first place because you haven’t got the self belief, you’ll never progress in your career.  You need to put aside those feelings and get some perspective. If you go for the promotion and don’t get it, nothing bad will happen, you’ll just be in the same position that you were before. Even those failures are a good thing because they are a learning opportunity that will help you next time you go up for a promotion.
